Cuba and Mexico 2014
15.03.2015
I love traveling with my glider around the world and Mexico is on of my favorite places to do so!
November was the time to go half way around the world and take part at the Aerothlon in Malinalco again- another time after 2013.
But this time the Aerothlon- a run, fly, mountain bike competition- was not only planned for Mexico but also for Cuba, just one week before.
So I went to Cuba, but when I arrived there, the comp was cancelled due to a corrupt official who wasn’t paid well to give permission:)
But well, being in Cuba is not the worst thing that could happen, so I decided to travel with a group of Canadian pilots and look for flying spots. We went to a place called Viñales. Beautiful, quiet, typical Cuban and with a ridge that can be flown. But first you have to find a take off…local pilots found places to take off before but they are extremely low and difficult.
In the end I flew, but it was another adventure for sure!
Thanks to the locals and the guys from Canada for all we did and the fun we had!
In Mexico I met my friend Pablo, the organizer of the Aerothlon, again. I stayed with him a few days in Toluca, the perfect place to get ready for a race…elevation 2600m, surrounded by mountains up to almost 4700m high. To get acclimatized well and fast for the race I had some great training runs in that area.
Malinalco is a small not yet totally touristic pueblo not far away from Valle de Bravo, but with similar good flying conditions. The comp went perfectly well! Although very good athletes were on the start line with me, I could reach the goal first overall- even before the participating teams (I went solo)!
I will be there again next year for sure!:)
